Buddy Caldwell-
Bud is a ten year-old African American living in Flint, Michigan. He has overcome many life challenges; his mother died, his foster home was mean to him, he ran away to find his father. Bud has many distinct traits; he it smart, brave, curious, and strong. "No sir, I don't know why, but my eyes don't cry no more," (Bud Caldwell). This quote informs the reader that Bud has been through so much misfortune that he doesn't have any more reasons to cry.
Herman E. Calloway-
Herman Calloway is the band leader for the Dusky Devastators of the Depression. Bud began his search for Herman because he thought that he was his father. Many people view him as a very rude, mean, and cranky old man who distrusts Bud. Herman is a round character because at the beginning of the book he was stern and cruel, by the end he was a loving grandfather who was suitable for a boy like Bud.
Lefty Lewis-
Lefty Lewis is the kind, compassionate man who was driving one day and decided to help Bud. Lefty was caring and brought Bud home to be fed and clothed. Without Lefty Lewis, Bud would not have been able to find his grandfather and the entire plot would be thrown off. Lefty Lewis was my favorite character because it seemed as though he was the only character who cared about other people and helped them.
Todd Amos and his family-
This is the mean family Bud runs away from. The Amos family only housed Bud to get money from the state. This cruel family abuses Bud and Todd always blames everything on Bud. The Amos family is a turning point in Bud's life because it sends him on his way to begin a search for his father.
Deza Malone-
Deza is a young girl about the same age as Bud. Deza lives homeless along the railroad in Hooverville. She gives him advice on how he can survive on his own, and how to do basic tasks such as washing dishes. She also teaches Bud some skills that help him remember his mother.
