The story begins when Bud is six years old and lives with his loving mother; he has never met his father. Bud’s life is forever changed when his mother passes away after being terribly sick for a few days. Buddy is moved to an orphanage where a malicious family named the Amoses adopt him. The characters Todd, Mrs, and Mr. Amose are initiated. The reader learns the setting is Flint, Michigan.

The Rising Actions occur when Bud decides to run away from home to begin a search for his father. A man named Lefty Lewis finds Bud walking the street and he picks him up and takes him to Grand Rapids, Michigan where his dad , Herman E. Calloway lives. Finding a flyer that advertises a jazz band titled “Herman E. Calloway and the Devastators of the Depression”, leads Bud to his next conclusion. Bud arrives at the location where Herman E. Calloway and his band are making jazz music. Meeting the band, Bud tells them his story and all the band members feel compassion for him because he is an orphan. Looking around the house, Bud discovers many photographs of his mother with the man who is believed to be his dad.
Climax
Is Herman E. Calloway Bud's grandfather? The turning point of the story is when Bud finds out that Herman E. Calloway is his grandfather.
Falling Action
Tears fall when Bud and Herman find out that they are related. His once stern and strict grandfather softens up and is glad to take care of Bud. Bud now travels with the band and is happy for what seems like the first time in his life.

Once everything is established and cleared up, there are no more tears. Bud is in the band and he enjoys attending all of their concerts. Bud lives in a loving home with his grandfather who is grateful to have him there.
