The major theme in this novel is that when one opportunity is closed, another always opens. When Bud's mother died, he was blessed with a sense of hope to find his grandfather. I chose this theme to represent my novel because in the book, Bud is constantly knocked down by barriers of adversity, he always finds a new way to overcome each obstacle. “There comes a time when you're losing a fight that it just doesn't make sense to keep on fighting. It's not that you're being a quitter, it's just that you've got the sense to know when enough is enough,” (Christopher Paul Curtis). This quote is significant to my theme because it depicts a time when Bud was struggling, but he knows in his heart that another opportunity will open.
Another theme involves the idea of destiny. Bud believed that it was his destiny to find Herman Calloway; he believed that his own fate lied in his hands. “A bud is a flower-to-be. A flower in waiting. Waiting for just the right warmth and care to open up. It's a little fist of love waiting to unfold and be seen by the world. And that's you,” (Christopher Paul Curtis). I chose this quote because it describes how Bud knew he could become something special, if he had someone who loved him to take care of him.
